Orchard Hill Generating Station Grand Opening

Orchard Hill Sanitary Landfill, Best Way Disposal’s landfill partner in Watervliet, Michigan, and Granger hosted an open house on Aug. 15, 2013 to celebrate the opening of a generating plant that will provide clean, renewable energy for many years to come.

Orchard Hill Sanitary Landfill has a long-term contract with Granger to supply landfill gas for the Orchard Hill Generating Station.  Landfill gas is composed of approximately 50 percent methane so it has about half the energy value of pipeline natural gas.  Landfill gas is a naturally occurring by-product that is created as the solid waste in the landfill decomposes.  The gas is collected through a network of wells and pipes throughout the landfill.  The landfill gas is pulled from the landfill to the generating station where it is processed and used as fuel for two 20-cylinder Caterpillar generators.  The generators at the Orchard Hill Generating Station have about 3.2 megawatts of capacity, enough to power nearly 2,000 average houses.
